Tipping Guide
Navigate tipping etiquette across the USA, Canada, and Mexico during the World Cup 2026
Tipping Culture by Country
United States
Tipping is deeply ingrained in US culture and is expected in most service situations. Many service workers rely on tips as a significant portion of their income.
Note: Not tipping is considered extremely rude. Some restaurants add automatic gratuity for groups of 6+.
Canada
Tipping culture is very similar to the US, though slightly less aggressive. Service workers earn slightly higher base wages in most provinces.
Note: Tax is not included in menu prices. Tip on the pre-tax amount. 15% is standard, 18-20% for great service.
Mexico
Tipping (propina) is appreciated and expected in tourist areas. Wages are lower, so tips make a meaningful difference for workers.
Note: Always tip in Mexican pesos when possible β workers lose money on currency exchange. 10-15% is standard at restaurants.

Always carry small bills ($1s and $5s in US/Canada; 20 and 50 peso coins in Mexico)
When in doubt, 15% is a safe default tip in the US and Canada
Credit card tip lines may suggest 18%, 20%, 25% β don't feel pressured to pick the highest
Some payment terminals calculate tip on the post-tax total, inflating the suggestion
Hotel staff and taxi drivers also appreciate tips in their local currency
If service is genuinely terrible, 10% signals dissatisfaction without being offensive
In Mexico, "servicio incluido" on the bill means tip is already included
